Tawakkol Karman Ridicules Syrians Calling for the Formation of an Inclusive Government

International activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Tawakkol Karman, ridiculed calls for the formation of an inclusive government in Syria following the fall of the al-Assad regime, describing them as a ridiculous joke without any legitimacy or logic. She clarified that, if there is any benefit to these calls, it is only to disrupt and sabotage the transitional process.

On her official Facebook page, Tawakkol Karman stated that the leader of the new administration in Syria, Ahmad Char’a, governs the country under revolutionary legitimacy, representing the factions that toppled the fallen Bashar regime.

She added that the only thing now required from him is to define a reasonable transitional period to accomplish the many necessary tasks for the transition to constitutional legitimacy. She noted that this period was set at four years, which she deemed reasonable for a country with such a destructive repressive legacy as Syria.

Tawakkol Karman emphasized that the transitional phase could be slightly shortened or extended, but she stressed that this was not important as long as during this period, freedom of expression was guaranteed, and everyone had the right to organize themselves politically and engage in political activities in preparation for the upcoming elections. The phase would culminate in free and fair elections held according to a new constitution that would be drafted and put to a referendum during the transitional period.

She insisted that this process was the only conclusive proof of the sincerity and commitment of Ahmad Char’a and his administration, and that the free and new Syria had just been born.

In the same Syrian context, Tawakkol Karman stressed the need to ensure that criminals and those involved in the massacres committed under the fallen Bashar al-Assad regime are not allowed to evade justice and retribution, within the framework of a transitional justice process that ensures such a past will never be repeated.

She stated: “The blanket amnesty and forgiveness, which the Syrian revolution seemed to be heading toward, tempted Bashar’s thugs and remnants of his regime to commit even more crimes and attempt to create an immediate counter-revolution.”
