The grip of militias brings Tripoli back to the cycle of violence
Armed clashes between two factions in the Janzour area sparked panic among residents and forced many shopkeepers to close their stores.
The Janzour area, located west of Tripoli, witnessed security unrest following the outbreak of armed clashes between two groups near the vegetable market along the coastal road on Thursday night into Friday. The situation gradually returned to calm, according to residents and security sources. Such incidents highlight the threats posed by armed groups to the stability of the Libyan state and to the security of its citizens.
Witnesses confirmed that the exchange of fire, involving light and medium weapons, created an atmosphere of fear among residents and compelled many traders to shut their businesses. Authorities did not immediately issue a statement specifying the number of casualties or injuries.
Security sources told the Al-Wasat Gate website that a force affiliated with the “Security Threats Combating Agency” later intervened to halt the confrontation. Its personnel were deployed between the rival parties, helping to contain the situation and bring the gunfire to an end.
Meanwhile, videos and images circulated on social media showed damage to vehicles and private property, as well as civilians trapped inside fuel stations during the clashes.
