The Relationship Between Al-Jama’ah Al-Islamiyah in Bangladesh and the Muslim Brotherhood is Extremely Strong: How?

Islamic philosophy professor Abdel-Raziq Abdel-Mohsen revealed that the functional and interconnected relationship between Al-Jama’ah Al-Islamiyah and the Muslim Brotherhood in Bangladesh has intensified significantly in recent years.

During his appearance on the program “The Other Side,” hosted by journalist Dalia Abdel-Rahim and broadcast on “Cairo News,” Abdel-Mohsen explained that the Muslim Brotherhood had sent congratulatory messages to the President of Pakistan after Islamabad’s independence. In response, the Pakistani president confirmed the strength of the relationship, emphasizing its inseparability in a special message to the Muslim Brotherhood‘s leader.

According to Abdel-Mohsen, and as reported by the site “Al-Bawaba,” the activities of Al-Jama’ah Al-Islamiyah in Pakistan extended to Bangladesh, which separated from Islamabad with India’s help. He added that Al-Jama’ah Al-Islamiyah in Bangladesh adopted the same logic as the Muslim Brotherhood regarding the necessity of holding power in any form, whether through gradual ascent or a complete takeover. He emphasized that the Muslim Brotherhood and Islamist groups aim to gain power and shift the balance in the Islamic world.

He also stressed that the strong bond between Al-Jama’ah Al-Islamiyah in Bangladesh and the Muslim Brotherhood stems from Abul A’la Maududi, a major inspiration for the contemporary Islamic movement in India and Pakistan. The beliefs, activities, principles, and foundations of the Muslim Brotherhood align with those of Al-Jama’ah Al-Islamiyah. Abdel-Mohsen clarified that the relationship between the Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Jama’ah Al-Islamiyah is very old, dating back to when the Muslim Brotherhood opened a study center, particularly for students from the Islamic world, to serve as nuclei of the group within Islamic countries.

He confirmed that the link between the Muslim Brotherhood and Islamist groups in various countries is based on the view that these groups consider society to be in a state of jahiliya (pre-Islamic ignorance), even if that society professes adherence to Islamic principles. He explained that the Islamist groups’ logic is that jahiliya only disappears with the implementation of Sharia and Islam, according to their understanding. He also noted a conflict between Al-Jama’ah Al-Islamiyah in Pakistan and the Bangladeshi government, which led to the arrest of Jama’at leaders and their death sentences, although the execution was later halted due to popular pressure.

According to the same source, researcher on extremist groups Ahmed Sultan confirmed that Al-Jama’ah Al-Islamiyah in Bangladesh is a branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, linked both intellectually and organizationally to the group. The organizational structure of Al-Jama’ah Al-Islamiyah is the same as that of the Muslim Brotherhood.
