TikTok CEO Urges Americans to Protect Their Constitutional Rights
The CEO of TikTok expressed disappointment after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill yesterday that could ban the popular social media app.
Shou Zi Chew urged users to reach out to U.S. senators and vote against the bill, which is now heading to the Senate.
In a video posted on TikTok, CEO Chew pledged to continue the fight to prevent the bill from becoming law and encouraged the public to keep expressing their opposition, stating, “We will not stop fighting and defending you. We will continue to do everything in our power, including exercising our legal rights to protect this incredible platform we have built together. We believe we can overcome this together.”
He added, “I encourage you to keep sharing your stories with your friends, family, and Senate members. Protect your constitutional rights. Make your voices heard.”
The House of Representatives, in a vote of 352 to 65, passed the bill on Wednesday to protect Americans from foreign-owned apps with ease.
The bill would require ByteDance, the Chinese-based parent company of TikTok, to either liquidate the app within 165 days or face a ban in the U.S. from app stores and web hosting services.
Supporters of the bill say it aims to mitigate national security risks posed by the ByteDance app, claiming it could share sensitive data of American users with the Chinese government.
