Trump’s Gaza Storm: Arab Initiative Seeks an Alternative to Halt Forced Displacement

The Arab world is outraged by Donald Trump’s plan to relocate Gaza’s population and is working to find an alternative to counter the U.S. president’s proposal.

Earlier, the American president suggested that the United States should take control of Gaza and relocate its residents to other countries, particularly Egypt and Jordan, while rebuilding the devastated enclave and transforming it into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

These statements sparked global outrage and were condemned by Arab states, which deemed them highly destabilizing.

This week, Egypt announced that it would host an emergency Arab summit later this month, stating that it would present a “comprehensive vision” for Gaza’s reconstruction while ensuring that Palestinians remain on their land.

On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared that Washington remained open to proposals from Arab nations regarding Gaza.

In this context, Reuters reported, citing diplomatic sources, that an urgent Arab initiative was underway to devise a plan for Gaza’s future in response to President Donald Trump’s ambitions.

According to these sources, preliminary ideas will be discussed during a meeting in Riyadh this month, with participation from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates.

These proposals, according to the sources, could include a Gulf-led reconstruction fund and an agreement to sideline Hamas from the process.

An Egyptian Alternative

Reuters spoke with fifteen sources in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and other countries to gain insights into the intensive efforts by Arab nations to formulate alternative proposals that could be presented to President Trump.

A senior Arab government official revealed that at least four proposals had already been drafted regarding Gaza’s future, but that an Egyptian initiative currently appears to be the foundation of Arab efforts to offer an alternative to Trump’s plan.

According to three Egyptian security sources, the latest Egyptian proposal involves forming a Palestinian committee to govern Gaza without Hamas’s participation, along with international cooperation for reconstruction without displacing Palestinians. The plan would also push toward a two-state solution.

An Arab government official stated that representatives from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the UAE, and the Palestinian Authority would review and discuss the proposal in Riyadh before presenting it at the Arab summit scheduled for February 27.

Additionally, Riyadh is also expected to host upcoming talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to end the war in Ukraine.

As of the time of writing, none of the mentioned countries have officially confirmed the details of these ongoing initiatives.
