Tunisia-General Rachid Ammar before transitional justice
Former Tunisian Army Commander, retired General Rachid Ammar, appeared on Monday before a transitional justice department on charges of murder during the events of February 25, 26, and 27, 2011. At the same time, the court postponed the case until the next session on February 14.
The Tunisian general denied all charges against him, even after President Ben Ali fled, stating that he was considered the “portemanteau” on which all errors were posted, only because he followed the plan of the Chief of the Army Staff and he respected the law and procedures, according to the website of the Tunisian newspaper Al-Chourouk.
According to Shems FM: “On January 13, 2011, he was operating the plan of the Chief of Staff of the Army of Land and was present in the Armed Forces Operations Room, noting that he had army forces deployed throughout the Republic of Tunisia, with 150 positions, with the aim of protecting these sites, which belong to sensitive sites for administrative, judicial, financial and industrial institutions, public or private, stressing that the Ministry of the Interior determines the location of these sites.
The general said: “On that date, all Tunisians learned of the deaths of citizens during the demonstration, confirming in this regard that he was not targeted by the demonstrators with any threat to any point or site secured by the army units.
The former Chief of Staff of the Tunisian Army announced his resignation in June 2013. In his first media appearance on the private Ettounsiya TV channel, General Ammar confirmed his request to be relieved of his position to the interim president at that time, Moncef Marzouki, who accepted it.
