Tunisia – Ghannouchi insists on breaking laws and shows indifference to judicial procedures

The President of the Muslim Brotherhood Ennahdha Movement, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rached Ghannouchi, shows indifference to the judicial procedures that are taken against him, after violating the laws by holding a virtual session of the parliament and implicating a number of the council members with him.

In an interview with the German News Agency, Ghannouchi confirmed that the virtual sessions of the dissolved parliament will continue, and that the office of the parliament’s presidency will meet soon to schedule a new virtual session, stressing that Ennahdha rejects the decision to freeze and dissolve the parliament.

Ghannouchi announced that the movement decided to leave on April 9th to protest against the decisions of Tunisian President Kais Saied and the dissolution of parliament.

Ghannouchi said: “The president does not believe in dialog, he wants a simple technical process to be resolved on the major issues and the fate of Tunisia, the regime that governs Tunisia is a 2014 constitution that was not made by Ennahdha alone”.

Rached Ghannouchi and the second deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Tarek Fetiti, appeared yesterday before the Public Prosecution in the Court of First Instance in the Tunisian capital, accused of conspiring against the security of the state, on the background of a virtual session held by the parliament last Wednesday, despite the decision of the President of the Republic, Kais Saied, to freeze the work of the legislature since the summer of last year.

The number of members of Parliament involved in the prosecution has reached 121 so far, according to article 72 of the Criminal Code, which stipulates that “the perpetrator of any attack aimed at altering the State, compelling the population to attack each other with weapons, inciting mobs, murder and looting in Tunisian soil shall be punished with death”.
