Tunisian President: The people are capable of withdrawing confidence from the deputies
Tunisian President Kais Saied on Monday warned the new MPs that the Tunisian people and voter are capable of withdrawing confidence from them.
This came as the opening session of the new Tunisian parliament was being held during a visit by Kais Saied today to the region of Ghardimaou in the northwestern province of Jendouba.
Kais Saied said it is important for the new representatives to know that Tunisia has entered a new stage.
Kais Saied called on MPs to overcome a ten-year-old mentality of divisiveness and equal treatment in parliament.
The new Parliament, which held its first session today, must draft appropriate legislation for the will of the people, he said.
“The new MPs must not forget that they are accountable to the people, and it is possible to withdraw the NDP from them if they are not up to the expectations of their constituents”, he added .
Tunisia’s 2022 constitution stipulates that deputies to the Tunisian parliament will not enjoy immunity; Voters in their constituency will be able to withdraw confidence from them if they violate their duties and promises.
The new parliament held its first session on Monday, in the presence of the newly-elected MPs, after more than a year and a half of suspension by Tunisian President Kais Saied on July 25, 2021.
