United Nations Day: The UAE as a Leading Model of Partnership for Peace and Development

On the occasion of United Nations Day, the United Arab Emirates stands as a pioneering model in promoting peace and development through active diplomacy and humanitarian initiatives that strengthen international cooperation and foster regional and global stability.

According to the Union Association for Human Rights, the solid strategic partnership between the UAE and the United Nations represents a unique example of international cooperation. Since the UAE flag was raised at the UN headquarters on December 9, 1971—just one week after the establishment of the Union—the country has demonstrated a consistent commitment to the principles and values of the UN Charter, working tirelessly to advance peace, development, and human rights worldwide.

In a statement issued to mark United Nations Day, observed on October 24, the Association noted that this year’s theme, “A Symbol of Hope for Global Unity,” genuinely reflects the UAE’s approach, which places human solidarity and international cooperation at the core of both its domestic and foreign policies.

The Association added that the UAE today serves as an active model in consolidating the values of unity and collective action for the betterment of humanity’s future.

It further highlighted that the UAE has strengthened its position as a trusted partner within the United Nations system through cooperation with more than 30 UN agencies, funds, and programs operating within the country, implementing over 60 programs and projects across diverse fields, including climate, food security, women’s and youth empowerment, gender equality, education, health, and innovation.

The launch of the “Global Climate Finance Center,” emerging from COP28, represents a pivotal milestone that reaffirms the UAE’s practical commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

The Association also pointed out that the growing UN recognition of the UAE’s role as a key partner in international cooperation is clearly reflected in the repeated visits of 34 UN Under-Secretaries-General and Assistant Secretaries-General in 2024, underscoring the nation’s prominent status within the multilateral system.

It reaffirmed that the UAE remains steadfast in its commitment to UN work, citing the recorded address by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. He stated: “We stand today at a historic moment marking eighty years since the establishment of the United Nations, yet we face complex global challenges that highlight the urgent need to revive the principles and values enshrined in the UN Charter to ensure the continuity of its role in maintaining peace and security.”

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum also emphasized that “since its founding, the UAE has pursued a foreign policy based on dialogue and understanding, guided by the values of tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and support for sustainable development across all sectors, while continuing its humanitarian assistance, combating terrorism, and countering hate speech and extremism.”

This commitment is further reflected through pioneering national policies, such as the establishment of the National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals in 2017, and through extensive humanitarian programs that have positioned the UAE as one of the world’s leading relief hubs, notably through Dubai’s “International Humanitarian City,” the largest of its kind globally.

The Association concluded that the close partnership between the UAE and the United Nations, which has resulted in distinguished initiatives and projects, serves as a tangible embodiment of this year’s theme. It reflects the UAE’s firm belief that international cooperation and solidarity remain the best path toward a more just, peaceful, and humane world—one that leaves no one behind.
