United States kills ISIS leader in Syria responsible for terrorism in Europe and the Middle East

A helicopter strike by US forces in northern Syria early Monday resulted in the “probable death” of a senior Daesh leader, the US military said.

The US Central Command said in a statement that the ISIS leader, who was not named, was “responsible for planning terrorist attacks in the Middle East and Europe.”

According to the British newspaper, The Independent, the US Central Command said that two other “armed individuals” were killed along with the target of the strike. The statement confirmed that no civilians or American forces were injured in the operation.

Syria’s White Helmets, a civil defense group operating in opposition-held areas of northern Syria, said they transferred two wounded during the strike to a local hospital, which later said they had died.

The White Helmets said a third person was killed when US forces landed in the raid.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which is involved with the US in fighting IS in northeast Syria, said the operation was launched from a base near the town of Kobani and targeted a military position of a Turkish-backed armed opposition group, and the village of Suwaida village in the Jarabulus area near the Turkish border.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, said the raid led to the arrest of a senior ISIS leader and the killing of three people.

The US military did not report any arrests.
