UNRWA: “Looting” Operations Hamper Aid Delivery in Gaza

On Monday, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned that what it described as looting operations are hindering the delivery of aid to the Gaza Strip.

Philippe Lazzarini, the agency’s commissioner-general, said that looting and smuggling are rampant in Gaza and are obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid.

During a meeting in Geneva of the advisory board tasked with overseeing the agency’s management, he confirmed: “The breakdown of public order leads to widespread looting and smuggling operations that hinder the delivery of urgently needed humanitarian aid.”

He added: “Israel seeks to end UNRWA operations, and if we do not resist, other United Nations agencies will be next.”

The agency’s centers, which shelter thousands of displaced Palestinians, are continuously targeted by the Israeli army.

On Sunday, eight Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a vocational training center run by UNRWA near Gaza City, which is used to distribute aid.
