Washington and Seoul Military Drills: Pyongyang Warns of War Triggered by a “Single Accidental Shot”

Tensions are escalating on the Korean Peninsula as joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea commence. Pyongyang views these drills as a direct threat to its security and a provocation that could lead to military confrontation.

On Monday, North Korea condemned the military exercises, labeling them a “provocation” and warning of the risk of war breaking out due to “a single accidental shot.” This warning comes just days after a South Korean Air Force mishap resulted in the accidental bombing of a village in the South.

According to North Korea’s state media, the country’s Foreign Ministry stated: “This is a serious provocative act that could escalate the situation on the Korean Peninsula and may lead to a conflict between both sides through a single accidental shot.”

The joint drills between Washington and Seoul, named Freedom Shield 2025,” are set to begin on Monday and will include “live, virtual, and field training exercises,” according to a U.S. statement indicating that the drills will continue until March 21.

Military cooperation between the United States and South Korea regularly provokes condemnation from Pyongyang, whose government perceives the drills as preparation for an invasion. In response, North Korea frequently conducts missile tests.

On Thursday, the South Korean Air Force announced that several civilians had been injured when one of its fighter jets accidentally dropped eight bombs outside the designated training field.

The two Koreas remain technically at war, as their 1950-1953 conflict ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty.

The United States maintains tens of thousands of troops stationed in South Korea.

The “Freedom Shield” military exercises between Seoul and Washington are among the largest annual joint drills conducted by the two allies.
