Washington threatens to hold the Iranian regime accountable for suppressing protests – Details

In the context of increasing international pressure on Tehran, against the backdrop of the latter’s ongoing suppression of mass demonstrations in the country, the U.S. State Department has confirmed that it will hold the Iranian regime accountable for the killing of its people and the brave protesters.

The State Department noted that the Iranian regime has caused chaos in the region and the world, and that negotiations for the Iranian nuclear deal are not currently on its agenda.

U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price said earlier this week that his country was “extremely concerned that the Iranian authorities may soon be executing other Iranians, after conducting show trials especially of teenagers and young adults, as part of their brutal campaign.”

He said the United States was “horrified” by the recent execution of two Iranians, Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini, as well as the sentencing of other protesters, saying that “the first was executed after what can only be called sham trials that were conducted in haste and lacked any guarantees of a fair trial.”

Meanwhile, a Politico report said it had obtained drafts showing the EU is considering new sanctions against Iran’s regime, including nearly 40 individuals and institutions, including the minister of sports and youth and several commanders of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.

According to the report, there are 27 EU documents that Politico has access to, called “evidence packages,” reports that were originally submitted as a basis for the proposed sanctions.

Senator Bob Menendez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, welcomed Britain’s intention to designate the IRGC as an “international terrorist organization.”

The IRGC is a terrorist group whose hands are stained with the blood of countless innocent lives; because of its terrorist acts and violence inside Iran, in the Middle East and around the world.

Iran has been witnessing protests since September 16th, following the death of young Mahsa Amini after she was detained by the morality police on the pretext of “misuse of the veil.” Iranian authorities have arrested thousands of people since then.

To date, Iran’s judiciary has sentenced 14 people to death over the demonstrations, according to official reports and AFP estimates. Others are expected to be executed.
