What are the new movements of the Muslim Brotherhood to obstruct the elections in Libya?

After the collapse of the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood group in Egypt and Tunisia, and its tightening grip by governments and people, the group continues to spread extremism, terrorism, and seek to obstruct the path to peace in the country.

They have found no better target than Libya to meddle with, as the terrorist group recently started spreading its terrorist plans within the Libyan parliament to obstruct the path of peace, which begins with the Libyan elections that Libya has been striving for for years.

What do the election laws in Libya entail?

The President of the Libyan House of Representatives, Councilor Aguila Saleh, stated that he reviewed the draft election laws prepared by the (6+6) Committee and found a deliberate point aimed at obstructing the elections, which is the mandatory second round in the presidential elections.

During his speech in the House of Representatives session, the President of the House of Representatives added: “Even if the candidate receives 99% of the votes, a second round will be held.” He expressed his astonishment at this unprecedented point, confirming that it has no equivalent in the world. He proposed granting a period of fifteen days to the winner, in case the winner holds another nationality, to relinquish it. If the winner does not comply, the second candidate will be named president of the country if they receive sufficient votes, or elections will be held between the second and third-placed candidates.

The controversial session

During the parliamentary session, the discussions and deliberations reached by the (6+6) Committee were reviewed, and the item was postponed until the committee officially submits its conclusions to the House of Representatives.

One article in the provisions, which obligates a runoff in the presidential elections, even if any candidate obtains 90% of the votes in the first round, was criticized.

According to informed sources, this article is seen as a Muslim Brotherhood trap and reflects the hidden intention of the Brotherhood current to obstruct the elections if they lose in the first round. It grants them a one-month opportunity to obstruct the second round, a point that the head of the High Council of State, Khaled Al-Mishri, and the Islamist current insisted on.

Obstructing the elections for their own interests

According to Libyan political researcher Mahdi Kaspar, the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood is attempting to obstruct the elections in Libya for their own interests. He noted that they seek to obstruct the elections in order to return to power again, and they are currently allies of Aguila, especially the Democratic Party led by Mohamed Sawan.

Kaspar explained that there is a difference between obstruction and violations, and indeed there were several objective, legal, and constitutional violations. Do you think that those who oppose these violations become obstructers?

Casper added: If he opposes even Bathely, the UN envoy in Libya, he will be obstructed because he criticized the electoral laws.

On the other hand, Libyan political researcher Adel Zubeidi stated that the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood deliberately seeks to destabilize the situation in Libya to serve foreign agendas.

He added that the Brotherhood organization continues its attempts to obstruct the Libyan elections, as well as its involvement in several accountability failures in Libya and the broader challenges that have arisen from the conflict during the past period.”
