WHO Warns Against Earphones: One Billion Young People at Risk

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned of a growing global threat to hearing health, stating that billions of people could face serious hearing issues.

In a recent report, the organization projected that by 2050, approximately 2.5 billion people will suffer from some degree of hearing loss, with more than 700 million requiring rehabilitation services.

The WHO attributes the rising rates of hearing loss to several factors, most notably prolonged exposure to loud noise and aging.

It emphasizes that this issue will have a major impact on public health, as well as social and economic consequences worldwide.

Shocking Statistics

  • More than 430 million people worldwide currently suffer from disabling hearing loss requiring rehabilitation.
  • Nearly 80% of these individuals live in low- and middle-income countries.
  • More than 25% of people aged 60 and over suffer from disabling hearing loss, affecting their ability to communicate and engage in daily activities.

The WHO warns that over one billion young adults are at risk of permanent hearing loss due to unsafe listening habits, such as:

  • Prolonged exposure to loud music in clubs and events.
  • Improper use of personal audio devices, such as earphones.
