Why is Google deleting old accounts?

This week, the search giant Google will begin the process of deleting inactive Gmail accounts in a move aimed at reducing the risks of forgotten accounts being exposed to threats, as they are often subject to less frequent security checks.

According to the American site “Axios,” “abandoned” accounts are at least ten times less likely than active accounts to undergo security measures such as two-step verification.

Google stated, “Once an account is compromised, it can be used for anything from identity theft to transferring unwanted or even harmful content.” It added, “Starting from Friday, accounts, along with their content and data, may be deleted if not used for a period of two years.”

Before deleting the account, Google will send notifications to the email address associated with the account, as well as to the emergency email address if available.
