Yemen: Online Campaign Turns into Popular Uprising Against the Muslim Brotherhood

Social media platforms in Yemen have erupted in an unprecedented wave of anger against the Muslim Brotherhood, fueled by the hashtag (“Expelling the Brotherhood is a Duty”).

Behind this viral tag, which swept across X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook within hours, lies a growing grassroots movement opposing what activists call the “cancerous expansion” of the Islah Party — the political front of the Muslim Brotherhood — into the core structures of the Yemeni state.

“We’ve had enough,” one activist wrote, adding, “We want a state free of hidden agendas, not one run from behind the scenes by a group skilled in infiltration and sabotage.”

Another user posted: “It’s time for uprooting, not partnership,” while a third wrote: “A state cannot be built on the wreckage of the Brotherhood’s betrayals.” Between the lines, the spirit of confrontation is clear — as if Yemenis, after years of war, are finally identifying and confronting an internal adversary long left unchallenged.

Campaign participants assert that the Islah Party is not merely involved in politics, but is exploiting its presence to seize control of security and military institutions, hindering any serious steps toward restoring the state or achieving peace.

As public services collapse and national resources are plundered, the campaign accuses Islah of playing a “double role” — negotiating as a legitimate actor while secretly operating as a parallel power that fuels internal chaos.

The hashtag did not remain a fleeting cry of anger. It has transformed into a new popular pressure front. Thousands of posts, photos, documents, and videos shared by users illustrate the Brotherhood’s deep infiltration into state institutions, and how some ministries have been turned into “party offices” serving their own agenda rather than Yemen’s.

This campaign is not happening in isolation. It comes amid growing popular and official calls to purge state institutions of the Brotherhood, which is accused of cloaking itself in religion and practicing long-term political deceit.
