Zelensky Calls for Tougher Sanctions on Russia… Because of Iran

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a fresh call to tighten sanctions against Russia, citing Moscow’s growing support for Iran.

Zelensky argued that Russia’s defense of the Iranian authorities highlights the urgent need to increase pressure on Moscow.

“The fact that Russia is deploying Shahed drones, designed in Iran, and using ammunition from North Korea is proof that Kyiv’s allies are not applying enough pressure on Moscow,” he said.

He added: “Now Russia is trying to protect Iran’s nuclear program… When one of its partners in war loses the ability to export tools of warfare, Russia becomes weaker and steps in. This proves again that aggressive regimes must not be allowed to form alliances or partnerships.”

According to Zelensky, Russia’s reliance on weapons supplied by Tehran and Pyongyang is “a clear sign that global solidarity and international pressure are still not strong enough.”

Russia signed a strategic partnership with Iran earlier this year. It condemned Israeli airstrikes on Iranian territory and offered to mediate. The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister also urged the U.S. to refrain from direct involvement.

Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Russia’s double standards, noting that Moscow defends Iran’s nuclear program while mercilessly attacking Ukraine.
