2025: The Year of the International Siege of the Muslim Brotherhood – An Unprecedented Clampdown to Curb the Movement’s Influence

The year 2025 witnessed an unprecedented escalation of international pressure on the Muslim Brotherhood, in what several reports have described as a “global siege” aimed at curbing the movement’s activities and weakening its political and social influence both within its countries of origin and abroad.

Throughout the year, measures accelerated, ranging from bans on legal activities in certain Arab states to European and American legislation tightening legal and security oversight of the organization. Experts have described these developments as a historic turning point in confronting the Brotherhood’s ideological framework.

According to a report published by the website Al-Youm Al-Sabea under the title “2025: The Year of the Ban on the Muslim Brotherhood and Unprecedented Blows Tightening the Noose Around the Movement,” the year saw concrete steps to contain the organization at both the international and regional levels, through multiple actions targeting its activities and affiliated associations in several countries.

The report noted that Jordanian authorities officially banned the group and declared its legal existence null and void, while security agencies in European countries such as Belgium, Sweden, and Switzerland launched extensive investigations into suspicious activities and potential funding linked to the Brotherhood, leading to heightened monitoring and the pursuit of individuals associated with it.

In the same vein, other reports highlighted how Western countries have adopted legislative and security-based approaches to contain the movement, including proposed laws in the United States aimed at designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization and imposing legal sanctions such as asset freezes and visa restrictions.

This reflects a fundamental shift in Washington’s approach to the organization after decades of allowing it to operate within the civil sphere.

At the same time, concerns over ideological infiltration within European societies have prompted governments in countries such as France and Germany to introduce proposals and measures to strengthen oversight of organizations linked to the Brotherhood and to prevent any activities that could undermine social cohesion.

According to experts, this global escalation signals a qualitative shift in strategies to confront the Muslim Brotherhood. The focus is no longer limited to addressing local branches or isolated activities, but has evolved into internationally coordinated efforts based on the view that the movement is no longer merely a political or social entity, but an ideological actor posing a threat to security and stability in various countries.

These developments come amid growing exposure of what critics describe as transnational “networks of influence” that exploit civil liberties, prompting enhanced coordination between Arab and Western states to curb the organization’s capabilities, funding sources, and activities.

Ultimately, 2025 can be regarded as the year of the international siege on the Muslim Brotherhood, with its initial outcomes reflected in a decline in the group’s influence on multiple fronts and a reduction in its impact on local and regional policies. This shift opens the door to a broader debate about the potential end of the Brotherhood’s role on the global political stage and the formulation of more effective policies to counter its ideological and organizational discourse in the years ahead.
