5.5-Magnitude earthquake strikes southern Iran
The German Research Center for Earth Sciences (GFZ) reported that a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck southern Iran on Tuesday morning.
The center added that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Iran is situated on multiple tectonic plates and experiences significant seismic activity. A 5.8-magnitude earthquake last occurred on January 18th, near Khoy, resulting in hundreds of people being injured.
In February 2020, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake on the border between Turkey and Iran affected the Habs al-Ulya village in western Iran, leading to the death of 9 people.
However, the deadliest earthquake in modern Iranian history was a 7.4-magnitude earthquake in 1990 in the northern part of the country, resulting in the deaths of 40,000 people, 30,000 injuries, and the displacement of half a million others.
