For those living in warmer parts of the world, the difference between the current cold in “Yakutsk” and the anticipated chill after the snowstorm may seem negligible. However, for the residents of this northernmost city in Russia, the situation is starkly different.

The regional meteorological service announced on its Telegram channel that temperatures in Yakutsk are forecast to plummet to -51°C between January 1 and 4, 2025.
The weather service described the snowstorm as a “dangerous climatic phenomenon,” predicting abnormally cold weather in Yakutsk and its surroundings.
Local authorities have issued warnings to residents about the possibility of severe snowstorms, advising them to prepare.
Residents, accustomed to temperatures around -40°C or slightly lower, view this additional 7°C drop as a substantial challenge. They will face an extreme cold wave that will affect their daily lives, including their clothing choices and modes of transportation.
A unique aspect of life in Yakutsk is the sale of meat and fish outdoors without freezers, as the external cold is more than sufficient to preserve them. The locals, who have adapted to the harsh environment in which they were born, find the suggestion of relocating to the warmer south somewhat odd.
