Spanish authorities halted, on Sunday, the search for missing British teenager Jay Slater, after he disappeared two weeks ago while walking in extreme heat on the island of Tenerife.

The day after the search was canceled, the grieving parents, Debbie Duncan and Warren Slater, spoke to Spanish officers in an attempt to get answers about the next steps in the investigation.

The world received the news of the search cancellation with surprise, and thousands of people sent messages of support and donations, closely following every update of the case as it entered its fourteenth day. However, the case was marred by online campaigns targeting the grieving family, and the search efforts were met with skepticism.

At this point, investigators announced that they had found no evidence of a crime in relation to Jay’s disappearance and that they were treating the case as a missing persons investigation.

As is customary in Spain, a report was filed with the court, which opened a routine judicial investigation and released details of the case yesterday. His disappearance was officially reported to the police between 6 PM and 8 PM on June 17.

Jay was enjoying a party at a nightclub in the Playa Las Americas resort the night before his disappearance. He was taken by two older British men on a 20-mile journey to their accommodation in Masca, 11 hours on foot from his place of stay, before he was seen leaving on foot the next morning. The police stated that the two men “had no involvement” in his disappearance.

A judicial source, preferring to remain anonymous, said: “There is no evidence of a crime at this stage of the case. This does not mean that things will not change, as the case remains open and investigations are ongoing. But this is the current situation.”

Jay’s family, including his mother Debbie, a school financial officer, and his father Warren, 58, have vowed to stay in Spain until Jay is found. Debbie had previously stated that she believed he might have been kidnapped, but there had been no credible ransom demands.

Meanwhile, TikTok star and amateur mountaineer Paul Arnott, 29, who is assisting the family, continued searching the area near Masca where Jay was last seen.

Arnott focused yesterday on two new clues, including a set of GPS coordinates and the discovery of a broken pair of sunglasses resembling those Jay had previously worn. However, it has not been confirmed that the sunglasses are related to the missing teenager.
