Iran’s “Recruitment” of an Israeli Businessman to “Assassinate Netanyahu”: The Full Story

A sudden arrest of an Israeli businessman followed by official statements from authorities revealed details of an “Iranian plot” targeting several assassinations, including that of Benjamin Netanyahu.

On Thursday, Israeli authorities announced the arrest of a businessman, stating that “Iran had recruited him to assassinate high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.” Tehran has yet to comment on the matter.

According to the authorities, the assassination list also includes Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) chief Ronen Bar, and former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

In a joint statement by the Israeli police and Shin Bet, they stated: “The targets: the Prime Minister, the Defense Minister, and the Shin Bet chief… An Israeli citizen was recruited by Iranian intelligence to promote the assassination of Israeli figures.”

According to the statement, the businessman was smuggled twice into Iranian territory and “received money for foreign missions.”

How did the story begin?

Israeli security services explained that “in August 2024, a citizen was arrested on suspicion of security violations related to contacts with elements of the Iranian intelligence system.”

They added that “during the investigation conducted by Shin Bet and the Israeli army, it was revealed that the citizen was a businessman who had lived in Turkey for a long time and had business and social relations with individuals of Turkish and Iranian origin.”

They continued: “As part of these relations, in April 2024, the citizen agreed to meet a wealthy businessman living in Iran named Adi, to strengthen commercial activity.”

“To enhance the business activity, he traveled to the city of Samandağ in Turkey, where he met representatives sent on behalf of Adi and held a phone conversation with Adi, who was unable to leave Iran.”

In May, the Israeli businessman then crossed the Iranian border by land to meet Adi, as he holds Israeli citizenship.

Israeli authorities clarified that “as part of this meeting, Adi suggested the Israeli citizen undertake various security tasks within Israel for the Iranian regime, including transferring money or weapons to pre-designated points, photographing different locations in Israel, and sending them to Iranian authorities, as well as threatening other Israeli citizens on behalf of the Iranian regime.”

They added that “the Israeli citizen requested to consider the matter” and subsequently crossed into Iran by land again in August 2024.

A Turning Point

The relationship deepened, as the Israeli authorities stated that the businessman “met – while staying at Adi’s home in Iran – other Iranian intelligence officials who asked him to carry out terrorist activities for Iran on Israeli soil, including assassination attempts on Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, or Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar.”

“Iranian intelligence officials also asked him to explore the possibility of assassinating other prominent figures, such as former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, and other public figures, in retaliation for the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh on Iranian soil in July 2024,” according to the statement from Israeli police and Shin Bet.

In further developments, “the Israeli businessman held another meeting with Iranian intelligence officials, who reiterated their proposal to assassinate senior officials and discussed the possibility of him depositing funds at certain points in Israel for others, and recruiting a Mossad operative to become a double agent.”

The statement mentioned that “during this meeting, the Israeli requested an advance payment of one million dollars, but the Iranian agents rejected his request and told him they would contact him in the future.” Before leaving Iran, he received 5,000 euros from Adi and an Iranian intelligence representative in exchange for his participation in the meetings.

On September 19, a serious security indictment was filed against the Israeli citizen, but the authorities did not disclose the circumstances of his arrest.

“A Serious Incident”

A senior Shin Bet official described the incident as “extremely serious,” noting that it is “an example of the significant efforts made by Iranian intelligence agencies to recruit Israeli citizens to bolster terrorist activities in Israel.”

He added that “security officials believe that Iranians will continue their efforts to recruit operatives in Israel to gather information and carry out terrorist missions, resorting, among other things, to elements with criminal backgrounds to execute these missions.”
