Shock in British Prisons: Muslim Brotherhood Infiltration… and Weapons Delivered by Drones

British prisons are undergoing a troubling transformation. No longer merely walls designed to isolate danger, they have become “lungs through which the Muslim Brotherhood and its extremist arms breathe,” according to newly released UK government reports. These reports warn of increasing dominance by the Brotherhood and other Islamist groups over certain prison wings, as well as their role in encouraging the radicalization of fellow inmates.

These warnings follow several serious violent incidents, including the stabbing of a prison officer at Long Lartin Prison. The weapon is believed to have been smuggled in via a drone. The Telegraph described the situation as a sort of “Amazon Prime service” for inmates, where drones are used to deliver weapons directly to their cell windows.

The threat doesn’t stop there. Manchester Arena bomber Hashem Abedi attacked three guards in the high-security Frankland Prison, using hot oil and two makeshift knives fashioned from baking trays.

In response, Robert Jenrick, Shadow Justice Secretary, warned that “Islamist gangs and violent inmates in our prisons are out of control,” describing the situation as a “national security emergency.”

Jenrick proposed radical measures including arming specialist units in category A prisons with tasers, stun grenades, and rubber bullets—with access to firearms in exceptional circumstances. He also called for immediate provision of stab-proof vests for officers.

He stressed the urgent need to expand the three existing separation centers—only two of which are currently operational—to isolate terrorists and extremist inmates from the general prison population. He cited a figure of 257 inmates incarcerated for terrorism-related offences, two-thirds of whom are Islamists. He also called for the reinstatement of solitary confinement for gang leaders, and the removal of their access to kitchens and basic equipment to regain control of the prison wings.

Other proposals include the removal of all extremist Islamist chaplains from prisons and the retroactive application of anti-terror vetting for religious care staff. He also called for mandatory quarterly reports on religious conversions and religion-related incidents in prisons.

The Ministry of Justice acknowledged the crisis as a result of past policies and warned that introducing firearms could increase the risk to staff. However, Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed she has ordered a review of separation centers, which may lead to expanded use and stricter measures for high-risk inmates.

Meanwhile, the Conservatives have proposed legislation to overturn a court ruling requiring prisons to consider inmate protests in isolation units, as well as a legal amendment to prevent terrorists from claiming compensation under the Human Rights Act and to delay their isolation.
