Al-Alimi: ‘Renewing the truce is welcome, but not at the expense of Yemenis’ future’

“The humanitarian crisis in Yemen has been made by Houthi militias with Iranian support, the head of the presidential council, Rashad al-Alimi, said on Saturday.”

The President of the Presidential Command Council made the remarks Saturday during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, which opened Tuesday, Yemen’s official news agency Saba reported.

“Al-Alimi presented the UN Secretary General with the developments in Yemen and the economic and service reforms and rights reforms led by the council and the Yemeni government in various fields,” SABA reported.

He also praised “the role of the United Nations and its Secretary-General, as well as its good offices to stop the war and reduce the impact of the worst humanitarian crisis created by the Houthi militias with the support of the Iranian regime.”

Guterres reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting the Presidential Command Council and the internationally recognized government, and to mobilizing resources to alleviate human suffering.

The UN secretary-general pledged to “deploy all efforts to consolidate and renew the truce, resume the political process and enable Yemenis to build their partnership state and respect human rights”.

A few days ago, Al-Alimi said, “The truce left no doubt that we, in the Presidential Council, are indeed missing a serious partner in the peace industry. It also strengthened the conviction of Yemenis regarding the difficulty of sustainable calm without a decisive deterrent with an armed sectarian group.”

He reiterated his firm stance that “we welcome the renewal of the truce, but not at the expense of Yemenis’ future, and in preparation for a bloody round of war and the granting of sovereignty and empowerment to these terrorist militias that threaten not only Yemen but the region and the world”.

Yemen is witnessing a humanitarian truce that entered into on April 2nd and will expire on October 2nd. The Houthis, however, sought to exploit the truce in order to mobilize militants and organize their military ranks.
