An “Unprecedented” Snowstorm Disrupts Life on a Japanese Island
The Japanese island of Hokkaidō has been hit by a powerful snowstorm that caused massive snowfall, leading to widespread disruptions affecting traffic and forcing airport closures, while residents faced extreme weather conditions.
According to meteorological reports, some areas of Hokkaidō recorded 120 centimeters of snowfall in just 24 hours, an exceptional level even for Japan’s harsh winters.
The cold wave also caused temperatures to drop to -12°C, leading to frozen roads and the shutdown of many essential facilities.
Videos shared by media outlets showed Japanese cities completely covered in snow, with residents struggling to clear the heavy snow accumulation and reopen roads. Stranded vehicles could be seen, with their owners attempting to move them manually through the thick ice.
The severe weather resulted in numerous flight delays and cancellations at Hokkaidō airports, along with disruptions to railway and highway traffic, making transportation nearly impossible in some areas.
Local authorities declared a state of emergency, warning residents of the dangers of traveling amid deteriorating weather conditions.
The Japan Meteorological Agency forecasts continued snowfall in the coming hours, with accumulations expected to reach 100 centimeters in the northwestern regions of the country and 50 centimeters in parts of Hokkaidō.
