Appeal postponed over fate of Kadhafi’s son in Libya presidential election

A session dedicated to Saif al-Islam Kadhafi’s appeal against the Independent High Electoral Commission decided to exclude him from running in the Sebha District Court has been postponed due to a lack of judicial committee members following the absence of a judge.

The Sabha Appeals Court was scheduled to rule Sunday on whether Saif al-Islam’s candidacy is valid, according to Mohammed al-Qiloushi, a member of his political team.

Al-Qiloushi said that the appeal period, which is set at 48 hours, will end today, considering that the legal team of Saif al-Islam Kadhafi filed the appeal request last Thursday, without taking into account Fridays and Saturdays, the holidays in Libya.

Ninety-eight candidates had filed their candidacy to run in the next Libyan presidential election. Twenty-five candidates, including Saif al-Islam Kadhafi, who filed an appeal against the decision and was accepted, were excluded from the initial list of the Elections Commission.

The initial list of candidates included Libyan army chief Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, parliament speaker Aguila Salah, and head of the national unity government Abdel Hamid Dbeiba.
