Saïf al-Islam Kadhafi announces candidacy for president of Libya

Saif al-Islam Kadhafi officially presented his nomination papers today for the presidential elections in the Sabha polling center in southern Libya, which is scheduled to be held in two rounds; the first will be on December 24th.

Official in the High National Elections Commission in Libya said that Saif al-Islam Kadhafi (49 years old) had registered as a candidate in the presidential elections.

Abdoul Hakim Bel-lkhair, a member of the High National Elections Commission, said: Saif al-Islam Mouammar Kadhafi led today, Sunday, November 14, the presidential elections in the Electoral Administration Office in the Sebha Center.

In a press statement quoted by ‘’Libya Election’’ channel, it confirmed that he completed all the legal grounds, according to the Presidential Election Law issued by the House of Representatives, and that he received a voter’s card from the “Republic 2021” Electoral Center.

The possibility of accepting Saif al-Islam’s candidacy is being questioned, as the International Criminal Court has been calling for his arrest on charges of crimes against humanity for several years.

Saif Kadhafi is considered one of the strongest candidates in the presidential elections. A poll conducted by ‘’Libya Election’’ channel showed a strong lead over the most powerful potential candidates, the current head of government Abdulhamid Dabaiba and the commander in chief of the army Khalifa Belqasim Haftar.

Just two days after the Facebook poll, Saif al-Islam received nearly 90,000 votes, compared to 80,000 votes for Abdulhamid Dabaiba and 40,000 votes for Khalifa Belqasim Haftar.
