Are the Muslim Brotherhood Intervening in the Appointment of a New President for Hamas? What’s the Context?

Reports have revealed that the Muslim Brotherhood intervened to appoint a new president for Hamas, replacing Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated last Wednesday in Tehran.

The channel released a video showing a phone conversation between leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood and the international organization in London, and a Hamas leader, discussing the arrangement of a meeting to choose and endorse a new president for Hamas.

The video shows Dr. Salah Abdel Haq, the acting leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, at a meeting with leaders of the international organization and members of the Global Guidance Office. He offers condolences over the phone to leader Khaled Meshaal, saying, “Speak, your brothers are here and listening to you.”

According to informed sources, the organization’s leaders have decided to appoint Khaled Meshaal as the head of Hamas on a temporary basis until new elections can be held.

This coincides with the international organization and the Brotherhood sending Dr. Helmi El-Gazar to Qatar to express condolences for Haniyeh and to speak with Meshaal.

This development follows reports of internal disputes within Hamas over the choice of Haniyeh’s successor.

Hamas issued a statement the day before yesterday stating that it has “initiated a broad consultation process within its leadership and advisory institutions to choose a new president for the movement.”

Sources indicated that Hamas conducted consultations in Qatar to select a successor to Haniyeh, confirming that Yehya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, opposes having Khaled Meshaal, the former Hamas president who survived an Israeli assassination attempt in Jordan in 1997 and currently resides in Qatar, lead Hamas at this time.

It was noted that Sinwar prefers Political Bureau member Khalil al-Hayya to succeed Haniyeh, pointing out that he seeks a figure with good relations with Iran and Syria to take over.
