Avoiding the Zelensky trap: Brazil requests guarantees before a Lula-Trump call

A Brazilian official stated that a phone call between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump requires guarantees.

According to Brazilian Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, Brasilia fears repeating the embarrassment faced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, when he was attacked by a Trump aide and journalists.

The disastrous meeting between Trump and Zelensky triggered a crisis between the two countries and affected vital aid to Kyiv, before a concerted European effort bridged the divide.

In an interview with CNN Brasil about efforts to negotiate the high U.S. tariffs on Brazilian exports, Haddad said the government is seeking channels to bring the discussion back onto a rational path.

He pointed out that Zelensky faced an “embarrassing situation at the White House” after harsh criticism from Trump and his aide J.D. Vance during a heated exchange.

Meeting the U.S. president has become a burden for heads of state and requires preparations to avoid embarrassing situations, according to reports covering Trump allies’ preparations for a White House visit.
