Britain welcomes UAE strategy for climate neutrality by 2050

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed the UAE’s strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

Johnson said in a statement that the UAE initiative is an important step in combating climate change.

Sheikh Mohammed ben Rachid Al Maktoum, UAE vice president and prime minister and ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mohammed ben Zayed Al Nahyane, crown prince of Abou Dabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE armed forces, launched today a strategic initiative aimed at achieving climate neutrality in the UAE by 2050.

The initiative focuses on intensifying efforts at the national level, in a qualitative step that makes the UAE the first country in the MENA region to launch a strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality.

The initiative aims to strengthen the vital state system for sustainable economic growth with a direct positive impact on GDP.

The announcement comes during Expo 2020 in Dubai and reflects the government’s serious efforts to contribute positively to global efforts aimed at limiting the repercussions of climate change. It is in line with the “50 Principles” document, which represents a road map to accelerate growth in celebration of the golden jubilee of the United Arab Emirates.

The significant economic opportunities offered by the path towards climate neutrality directly support the vision of uniting efforts to build the world’s best and most dynamic economy.

The announcement came at the end of the government’s acceleration program, which was established earlier this year. The government’s acceleration of climate ambition and economic development took a comprehensive approach to determining the country’s path toward climate neutrality, benefiting from green economic growth strategies and creating new jobs.

The announcement of the Strategic Initiative for Climate Neutrality is the culmination of the State’s efforts and progress in working for climate at the local and global levels over the past three decades since its accession to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1995.

Since then, the United Arab Emirates has adopted a wide range of legislation and implemented many measures aimed at reducing emissions and providing sustainable solutions, in line with best practices in all vital sectors, including energy, industry and agriculture.
