Counterfeit currency and buying loyalty: The latest crimes of the Muslim Brotherhood-aligned legitimacy in Yemen’s Shabwah

Southern activist Fahd Saleh revealed that the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated legitimacy has recently been involved in printing counterfeit currency in Shabwah and distributing it in local markets.
He wrote: “Counterfeit money is being circulated and spread across markets and is being used to purchase real estate as well as to buy loyalties. As long as there are people willing to sell their conscience and principles, they deserve nothing more than to be bought — with fake money.”

He emphasized: “Officials within the Brotherhood-led legitimacy are the main orchestrators behind the distribution of counterfeit currency in the markets… They are also the primary actors in using forged money to buy loyalties.”
He concluded by saying: “We have always said that the Brotherhood-aligned legitimacy and its officials are nothing but a gang… Events continue to confirm this. In the future, we expect them to be exposed for trafficking in drugs. Nothing surprises us anymore — their only goal is money, and they’re willing to do anything to get it, including buying people’s loyalties.”

This situation comes amid mounting despair and frustration caused by the dramatic collapse of Yemen’s economy and the national currency, which has severely affected the purchasing power of Yemeni citizens — particularly in the southern provinces, where foreign currency exchange rates have soared uncontrollably against the Yemeni riyal.
This has paved the way for counterfeit networks and war profiteers to expand and thrive, taking advantage of the chaos that has plagued the country for over seven years. They have exploited the people’s increasing need for foreign currency in the face of a severe livelihood crisis, rising poverty, soaring prices, and the continued erosion of Yemen’s governmental institutions.
