Dead and injured in missile attacks and airstrikes on Baghdad

The Iraqi Ministry of Interior stated that an officer holding the rank of captain and four of its personnel were injured while stationed at a security checkpoint in the Sabaa Al Bour area, part of the Al Taji sub-district.

On Wednesday, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced the death of two civilians and the injury of five security personnel as a result of falling missiles and airstrikes on the capital, Baghdad. This comes amid heightened tensions after protesters stormed the Kuwaiti consulate in the city of Basra following a missile attack launched, according to security estimates, from Kuwaiti territory, which resulted in three fatalities.

In a statement published by the Iraqi News Agency, the ministry said that “at 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday (20:00 UTC), several security incidents occurred in Baghdad as a result of falling missiles and airstrikes (whose source was not specified).”

Regarding the details of the attacks, the ministry said that an officer with the rank of captain and four of its personnel were injured while at a security checkpoint in the Sabaa Al Bour area, part of the Al Taji sub-district northwest of Baghdad, following an airstrike targeting a camp belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces located nearby.

It added that two people were killed after a projectile struck a civilian house on Al Munathama Street in the Al Amiriya district west of Baghdad. It also noted that part of a house roof caught fire on Palestine Street at the Al Nakhla intersection in eastern Baghdad as a result of an airstrike, without causing human casualties.

The ministry reported that other attacks in Baghdad included the fall of two unexploded projectiles near the Imam Al Muntadhar Husseiniya (a Shiite mosque) in the Al Taji sub-district and on Palestine Street, as well as the burning of two civilian vehicles in the Jamila area and on Palestine Street in eastern Baghdad.

The ministry confirmed, according to the statement, that “civil defense teams and the competent security services immediately responded to all incidents, extinguishing fires, handling unexploded ordnance, and securing the areas,” noting that “the relevant authorities have launched an urgent investigation to uncover the circumstances of these attacks and to take the necessary measures.”

As part of the repercussions of the Israeli-American war against Iran, which began on February 28, Iraq has been subjected to a series of attacks by Washington and Tel Aviv targeting what the two countries consider armed factions loyal to Tehran.

Armed factions calling themselves the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” have, for their part, claimed attacks on what they describe as U.S. interests, in solidarity with Iran.

Iraqi caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani called for the country not to be turned into an arena for regional score-settling, believing that an announcement of a truce between Washington and Tehran would serve the interests of Iraqis affected by the consequences of the war.
