Earthquake of Magnitude 5.5 Strikes China’s Qinghai Province

The China Earthquake Networks Center reported that an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck Qinghai Province, located in northwest China, at 3:44 p.m. (0844 GMT) on Wednesday.

Data revealed that the earthquake’s epicenter was in Maduo, within the Golog region, at a depth of 14 kilometers.

This earthquake follows a severe tremor that hit a remote area in the Himalayan mountains in Tibet Province on Tuesday, which was also felt in Kathmandu, the capital of neighboring Nepal.

The Tibetan earthquake claimed the lives of at least 162 people. According to China’s Xinhua news agency, local authorities stated that “many buildings collapsed near the epicenter.” The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimated the magnitude of that earthquake at 7.1.
