Egypt Nominates ‘Voy Voy Voy ‘ for Oscar Competition”

The Egyptian Cinema Syndicate announced on Monday the nomination of the film “Voy Voy Voy,” directed by Omar Halal, for the competition for the Best International Film category at the 96th Academy Awards.

The film stars Mohamed Farag, Nelly Karim, Bayoumi Fouad, Taha El-Desouki, Amgad El-Hajjar, Bessant Shawky, Haggag Abdel Azim, Hanan Youssef, and Lubna Wanas. It began screening in cinemas last week.

The syndicate stated in a press release that the film received the majority of votes from the committee responsible for selecting Egypt’s entry for the Oscars. The committee consists of a group of independent filmmakers and critics.

The committee members voted on a shortlist of five films, including “Wash Upon” directed by Walid Al-Helfawi, “19 B” directed by Ahmed Abdullah El-Sayed, “Bayt El-Rubi” directed by Peter Mimi, “El-Bab El-Akhder” directed by Raouf Abdel Aziz, in addition to the nominated film.

Egypt refrained from nominating any films for the competition dedicated to non-English language films last year.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is expected to announce the preliminary list of competing films in December, followed by the shortlist in January.

The Oscars ceremony is scheduled for March 10, 2024, in Los Angeles, USA.
