German meteorological service: Temperature rose by two degrees in 2023 


The German Meteorological Service announced that the

in 2023 increased by two degrees Celsius compared to values in previous years.

This information was provided in the interim annual statistics published by the agency in Offenbach on Friday.

 

Earlier, the agency had stated that 2023 is the warmest year in Germany since measurements began in 1881.

The average temperature in the current year reached 10.6 degrees for the first time, representing an increase of 2.4 degrees compared to the internationally adopted reference period between 1961 and 1990, according to the agency’s preliminary analysis.

The temperature increase amounted to 1.3 degrees compared to the current period and was the warmest between 1991 and 2020.

Tobias Fox, a board member responsible for climate and environment at the agency, commented on the data, warning: “Climate change continues unabated.”

The agency explained that the climate conditions in the current year were dominated by moist and warm conditions accompanied by large amounts of rainfall.

According to the statistics, the year 2023 ranked sixth in the ranking of the most humid years.

Initial analyses revealed that the agency recorded an annual rainfall average of 958 liters per square meter this year, exceeding 20% of the average in the two reference periods.

The percentage increase in the brightness of the sun in the current year reached nearly 15% compared to the reference period between 1961 and 1990, and about 5% compared to the reference period between 1991 and 2020.
