Mr. Buffet explained that this measure aims to quickly restore essential services and develop a sustainable reconstruction plan for the island.
This procedure, specifically introduced to meet the needs of overseas territories, is a first of its kind. It enhances the ability of local and national authorities to respond promptly by simplifying certain administrative processes, ensuring more effective support for Mayotte’s residents.
The activation of this emergency state will initially last for one month, with the possibility of extensions for additional periods of up to two months, depending on the situation.

Mr. Buffet emphasized the importance of mobilizing all available resources to assist the population during this ordeal. He also announced the implementation of a curfew on the island to ensure security and prevent looting.
As the provisional death toll rises to 31, French President Emmanuel Macron has announced his intention to visit the archipelago. He will arrive aboard a plane carrying four tons of humanitarian aid and a rescue team.
