New Moon Age Discovery: Ancient crystals reveal details
A recent study has uncovered a new secret about the formation and age of the Moon, contradicting a previously held scientific belief.
In a research paper published in the journal “Geochemical Perspectives Letters,” scientists revealed that the Moon formed approximately 4.52 billion years ago, which is 40 million years older than previously thought.
This discovery was made by studying ancient crystals found in rocks collected from the Moon during the Apollo 17 mission in 1973.
The scientists analyzed the sample through a mineral known as “zircon,” which is valuable for dating rock samples due to its content of radioactive elements like uranium and thorium. This enables them to determine the crystallization age for the first time.
