Replacing Soldiers: Amphibious Robot Swims to the Front Line With Ammunition

An amphibious robot has completed an unprecedented battlefield logistics mission, travelling dozens of kilometres to deliver ammunition and supplies to frontline positions.

According to information from Business Insider, Ukrainian forces used an amphibious ground robot to transport provisions and ammunition for nearly 40 kilometres across both land and water. It was reportedly the first logistics mission of its kind.

Forty Kilometres Across Land and Water

Operated by soldiers from the 93rd Mechanised Brigade, the amphibious robot travelled 25 miles—approximately 40 kilometres—across varied terrain to deliver ammunition and provisions to positions on the front line.

“Water obstacles along the front line represent a major challenge for military logistics,” Ukraine’s state-backed Brave1 innovation platform said in a statement.

“Rivers, canals and marshes can severely disrupt or completely cut off supply routes used by conventional unmanned ground vehicles, while aerial resupply is not always feasible,” it added.

It Drives, Then Swims

The robot deployed in the mission, named Triton, is a domestically developed Ukrainian system.

On land, it operates as a highly mobile and manoeuvrable unmanned ground vehicle. Upon reaching water, it can switch to swimming mode within seconds.

According to Brave1, this capability gives a single platform greater flexibility to operate across complex terrain and in diverse operational environments.

Triton underwent several months of development before carrying out the mission. Its design was closely coordinated with soldiers to ensure that it met their operational requirements and could handle frontline terrain.

Brave1 did not disclose the precise date or location of the operation.

Delivering Supplies Without Risking Soldiers

The mission reflects the growing role of ground robots in Ukrainian logistics operations this year. Officials are seeking to replace soldiers with machines wherever possible during dangerous frontline assignments.

Ukrainian defence companies have long been developing amphibious robots for battlefield use.

In May, Ratel Robotics told Business Insider that it was designing unmanned ground vehicles for casualty evacuation, logistics support and offensive missions in amphibious environments.

In June, Brave1 launched a new funding track for amphibious robots under its grant programme, with support from Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence.

The amphibious logistics mission comes as robots are increasingly deployed for unconventional tasks on the battlefield.

Earlier this month, Ukraine’s Third Army Corps revealed that it had used heavy bomber drones to air-drop ground robots several miles behind Russian positions as part of a surprise attack.

The assault took place during Operation Vivaldi, a major Ukrainian offensive currently under way in the east. Kyiv says the operation has recaptured dozens of square kilometres previously held by Russian forces.
