Sale of ‘Woman of the Hour’ painting.. Picasso’s second most expensive work
The 1932 Pablo Picasso “Woman of the Hour” was sold for $140 million at an auction in New York.
It was Picasso’s second-most expensive ever auction, with the painting grossing $139.4 million, according to Sotheby’s auction house.
In 2015, Picasso’s “The Women of Algeria” (Version O) was auctioned at Christie’s in New York for $179 million.
Sotheby’s said the painting, painted in 1932, a photograph of his mistress Mary Therese Walter, was purchased by collector Emily Fisher Landau in 1968 and hung over the fireplace in her New York apartment for years.
It was not initially clear who bought the painting on Wednesday.
Along with Picasso, about 120 more works will be sold at the two-day auction.
