The Arab Maghreb: Failures and Defeats Prompt the Brotherhood to Withdraw from the Political Scene

The Muslim Brotherhood received successive blows that caused it to lose many of its bases in North Africa and the Maghreb, as well as its political project from Egypt through Libya to the Maghreb.

Change After Defeat

The failure of the Brotherhood’s political project in the region forced the Brotherhood to adopt an intellectual retreat. The Brotherhood adopted an alternative plan for the coming stage, and since its establishment 94 years ago, it has leaned on political work to achieve its goals.

Egypt

In Egypt, the London Front, led by Ibrahim Munir, announced its withdrawal from any struggle for power in the country. Stressing that the goal of its political mission was not just to reach power, but to deal with what it described as a “critical moment” in Egypt’s history.

It stressed that it has three political priorities in the next stage, namely ending the issue of detainees, achieving reconciliation and building a national partnership, which requires overcoming the power struggle.

Libya

The group in Libya was not any better off, especially after the defections that hit the Brotherhood there; In May 2021, the group announced its transformation into an advocacy group called “Revival and Renewal”, as part of the implementation of the instructions of the international organization, which seeks to improve its image.

The former head of the Justice and Construction Party (JCP), the political arm of the Brotherhood in Libya, said after he defected and founded the Democratic Party in August 2021 that his party would be far removed from the Brotherhood’s ideology.

Tunisia

After the July 2021 devastating blow by Tunisian President Kais Saied, Ennahdha’s leadership tended to “retire” from politics.

In September 2021, 113 leaders announced their resignation from the movement, which was preceded by Ennahda vice-president Abdelfattah Mourou in 2020 by announcing his withdrawal from political life and other public affairs.

Morocco

As for Morocco, the Justice and Spirituality Movement confirmed its pride in the Islamic values of Moroccan society, the Moroccans’ connection with the Koran, the Sunna of the Prophet, and the place of scholars and readers in the conscience of Moroccan society, which indicates its advocacy away from political action, during the current period.

Failures and defeats

The Brotherhood found itself engrossed in failures and consecutive defeats, confusing its ranks and forcing it to resort to a “temporary withdrawal” from the political scene. “as a strategic choice while retaining the fields of advocacy and voluntary civic and charitable work, as means to reach Arab communities.”

Tunisian writer and researcher Bassel Tergman said the Brotherhood terrorist group has built its movement on three pillars; The first is lying, the second is pious and the third is grievous, he said, pointing out that the failures that haunt the Brotherhood always come after their fraudulent truth was revealed in the Arab street.
