The Muslim Brotherhood and the Palestinian Cause: A Strategy of Deception for Fundraising

In a development that highlights the Muslim Brotherhood‘s opportunistic use of major causes as tools for financial and media influence, researcher Maher Farghali revealed that the organization does not embrace the Palestinian cause out of genuine support or a commitment to liberation, but rather uses it as an effective means to collect donations and attract followers in service of its own political and propaganda goals.

According to the News Room website, the Brotherhood has, since its inception, systematically exploited the Palestinian issue for its own benefit. It has been willing to spread misinformation—even aligning with aspects of the Israeli narrative concerning the Gaza blockade—while attacking Egypt through Europe-based digital platforms designed to undermine Cairo’s role and amplify the emotional appeal of the Brotherhood’s rhetoric.

Speaking on Extra News TV, Farghali stated that the Brotherhood portrays itself as the true representative of Muslims, using the Palestinian narrative to spread inflammatory messages against the Egyptian state, accusing it of blocking aid or forcibly displacing Palestinians. This tactic forms part of a deliberate strategy aimed at misleading public opinion and securing political and financial support.

He added that the group increasingly relies on “fourth- and fifth-generation media warfare” techniques—such as editing videos, removing clips from their original context, and employing digital falsification—on platforms like Telegram. These tools aim to deceive viewers, fabricate human rights violations, and smear Egypt’s image through fake news recycled across a network of Brotherhood-linked channels and websites.

Farghali emphasized that such tactics have gradually exposed the organization to a wider public that is now able to distinguish between authentic support for the Palestinian cause and the Brotherhood’s instrumentalization of political Islam as a cover for ideological recruitment and the propagation of a partisan agenda.

It is worth noting that the Muslim Brotherhood’s exploitation of the Palestinian cause is not new. As early as the 1930s, the group was raising slogans such as “Jerusalem is in danger” and “Palestine is a sacred trust” to mobilize public sentiment and advance its ideological project. Since then, the cause has been a recurring theme in its political and religious discourse—not as a platform for tangible support to the Palestinians, but rather as a convenient shield for soliciting financial backing and building legitimacy in both Arab and Western societies.
