Turkey: Scissors Forgotten in a Patient’s Abdomen for 7 Years

Doctors in Turkey accidentally discovered a large pair of scissors, measuring 16 centimeters, inside a patient’s abdomen, where they had remained for seven years without her noticing.

The story began when Fatma Kala, 36, visited a hospital in the city of Kahramanmaraş, in southern Turkey, complaining of headaches. Her doctor advised her to undergo an MRI scan.

During her discussion with the MRI technicians, the patient mentioned that she had previously entered the MRI room several times with her young daughter and experienced pain on the right side of her body.

The imaging team learned that she had undergone surgery seven years earlier at a private hospital to remove ovarian cysts. They recommended she consult her previous doctor, who took an X-ray of her abdomen and discovered the scissors, but chose not to inform her.

Instead, the doctor suggested that she undergo another surgery in the ovarian area, attempting to convince her it was necessary to correct his serious mistake without disclosing the truth.

Fatma, however, became suspicious of her doctor’s explanation and sought care at a public hospital. There, an X-ray revealed the large scissors. She subsequently underwent a successful surgery to remove the object after all these years.

After recovering, Fatma, accompanied by her husband, filed a complaint against the doctor to hold him accountable for this grave medical error.

Many bloggers shared photos of the large scissors that Fatma held in her hand after their removal, highlighting one of the most striking cases of surgeons leaving instruments inside patients.
