Two Acute Crises… Pope Francis on Respiratory Support

The Vatican announced that Pope Francis experienced two new acute respiratory crises on Monday and was placed back on respiratory support.

The pontiff inhaled significant amounts of mucus, marking a new setback in his health after more than two weeks of battling a complex respiratory infection and pneumonia, according to Reuters.

The Vatican stated that the crises were caused by a “substantial buildup” of mucus in the lungs and spasms in the trachea. It added that “two bronchoscopies were performed to remove the excessive secretions.”
