The pontiff inhaled significant amounts of mucus, marking a new setback in his health after more than two weeks of battling a complex respiratory infection and pneumonia, according to Reuters.
The Vatican stated that the crises were caused by a “substantial buildup” of mucus in the lungs and spasms in the trachea. It added that “two bronchoscopies were performed to remove the excessive secretions.”
