“Land of Migration and Jihad”: ISIS turns Africa into a new front for international terrorism

The terrorist organization ISIS continues to expand on the African continent, with a recent report revealing that the group now conducts over 60% of its global activities in Africa, according to the African edition of “Business Insider.”

The report, published by the site “HumAngle,” indicates that the presence of ISIS-affiliated groups in Africa is turning it into a new front for international terrorism. These groups can recruit, train, and carry out attacks across the continent.

This shift began when the terrorist organization called for migration to Africa, designating it as the “land of migration and jihad” after its losses in the Middle East.

For instance, issue 445 of the ISIS propaganda weekly, “Al-Naba,” detailed the group’s terrorist activities for the period from May 23 to May 30.

The data showed that 23 out of 37 terrorist operations (62%) conducted during this period occurred in Africa. Specifically, Central Africa recorded 14 attacks, West Africa 7, Libya 1, and Mozambique 1, according to ISIS‘s propaganda newspaper.

The report confirms that these attacks resulted in 224 casualties. It also highlights the terrorist organization’s increasing plans to exploit the “vulnerabilities” of the continent. The report notes that the expanding presence of ISIS in Africa has “significant implications for regional and global security.”

The continent’s vast ungoverned areas, porous borders, and social and political challenges provide fertile ground for armed groups and terrorist activities.

The report also notes that ISIS primarily targets civilians in Central African villages by instilling fear and exercising control through the destruction of homes.

In Mozambique, for instance, the report reveals that terrorists have displaced many local inhabitants, specifically targeting Christian populations as part of the organization’s “Break the Cross” campaign.

This campaign is part of ISIS‘s agenda to “terrorize Christians and those who do not align with their ideology,” according to Business Insider.

Finally, the report states that recent ISIS propaganda materials in West Africa show intensive attacks on military sites and continuous targeting of civilians through suicide bombers.
