11 Tips to Extend Your iPad’s Battery Life

The strength of iPads lies in their long battery life, allowing you to browse the web or watch videos for up to ten hours. However, not everything you do will give you ten hours of battery life. Playing demanding games, using a video editing app intensively, or running your iPad at full brightness can drain the battery quickly. At times, the reason for fast battery drain is not obvious, as background processes or poorly coded apps may be to blame.

Here are the top 11 tips to improve battery life on iPads:

  1. Use Dark Mode
Since iOS 13, iPads have featured dark mode, which can slightly improve battery life by reducing brightness. On the iPad Pro M4, dark mode can significantly extend battery life, thanks to OLED screens that turn off pixels when the screen is dark, saving energy.
  2. Monitor Battery Usage by App
You might already know the trick of disabling apps that drain your battery. Unfortunately, you need to track these apps manually. Open Settings > Battery and check the Battery Usage by App tab to see which apps are consuming the most battery.
  1. Turn on Low Power Mode
Low power mode is a simple way to extend battery life. It automatically activates when the battery is low, indicated by a yellow battery icon. You can also turn it on manually via Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode, which reduces performance, screen brightness, and refresh rate.
  2. Disable Background App Refresh
Background updates for apps like YouTube or iCloud sync often cause rapid battery drain. You can turn off background activity entirely or for specific apps via Settings > Background App Refresh.

  1. Monitor Mobile Data Usage
If your iPad is connected to a mobile network, monitor your data usage, as updates via 5G can drain the battery. Check Settings > Mobile Data to disable data for individual apps.
  2. Use 80% Charging
It may seem odd, but charging your iPad to only 80% can prevent long-term battery degradation. The latest iPads have an option to limit charging to 80%, which you can disable when necessary.
  3. Replace the Battery
If you experience consistent battery issues, consider replacing the battery. We recommend purchasing a new battery from an Apple-certified store to avoid the risks associated with counterfeit batteries.
  1. Set Faster Auto-Lock
The brighter the screen, the more battery it uses. Set auto-lock to a lower time interval in Settings > Display & Brightness.
  2. Turn off Auto-Brightness
The iPad has a brightness sensor that automatically adjusts the screen brightness, which can impact battery life. Turn off auto-brightness in Settings > Accessibility > Display.
  1. Use Airplane Mode
Airplane mode can extend battery life by preventing the iPad from updating apps or syncing with iCloud. It’s useful when you don’t need to be online.
  2. Turn Off the iPad
For older iPads, turning them off completely when not in use for hours is the best way to save power.

Lastly, if you plan to not use an old iPad for a while, turn it off when the battery is half full to minimize battery degradation over time.
