Syria: Death and Injuries in the Collapse of a Pedestrian Bridge

In a tragic and unexpected accident, a steel pedestrian bridge, designated for crossing over vehicles and passenger buses, collapsed at the end of the southern ring road in Damascus.

The Syrian Ministry of Interior reported that the incident resulted in the death of one person and injuries to others who were inside a small passenger bus when the bridge completely collapsed on top of it.

Investigations revealed that the bridge collapsed after being struck from below by a truck carrying an excavator, whose height slightly exceeded that of the bridge.

The collapse caused severe traffic congestion on the main road, which is always busy, hindering the arrival of ambulances. The police opened a special lane to facilitate the transportation of the injured.

It should be noted that the southern ring road leads to the western rural villages of Damascus, such as Soumariya, Jdeidet Artouz, Qatana, and the villages of Mount Hermon.
