Houthis Exploit Mawlid in a Way that Distorts Islam: Details

The Houthi militias continue to exploit religious occasions to promote their sectarian and political ideas, as evidenced by their use of the Mawlid celebration to link their cause to the Prophet – peace be upon him – portraying their struggle for power as a continuation of his jihad. They use this celebration to collect funds, recruit fighters, and display crowds of citizens who are coerced into supporting them.

According to a report published by the Yemeni channel “Belqees,” the Houthi militias impose their influence on the celebrations in the areas they control, banning any activity that does not align with their orientations, even if it concerns distributing aid to flood victims, whose celebrations take place on their drowned bodies and ravaged lands.

In this context, Islamic thought researcher Dr. Abdullah Al-Qaisi states: “To keep the Arab viewer informed, the debate in Yemen about Mawlid is not similar to the debate in other countries regarding whether it is an innovation or not, although this issue also exists.”

He explains: “The debate in Yemen is that this situation is a case of political exploitation, and this political exploitation is not even comparable to historical exploitation; it is far more advanced.” He adds: “There is an extremely high level of exploitation of this occasion, to the point that it not only loses its spiritual essence but turns into its opposite.”

He continues, according to the Yemeni channel: “Last week, Yemen experienced a disaster, and the Houthi group did not respond adequately. They do not want to assume any responsibility, they just want to rule, stage a coup to seize people’s money, and dominate and oppress them.”

He states: “The Houthis exploit these occasions, which are common among Shiite groups, to control citizens, keeping them in a constant cycle of activities, preventing them from reflecting by keeping them in a perpetual state of motion.”

He adds: “The Houthis have moved from the issue of Palestine to the issue of the Prophet. They typically choose issues that resonate emotionally with Arab and Muslim peoples, like the issues of Palestine and the Prophet, to mobilize the largest number of people. When people take to the streets and participate in celebrations, it presents an image of external support for their objectives.”

For his part, Ammar Al-Tam, president of the “Joudour” Foundation for Thought and Culture, reveals that the Houthis do not commemorate their own birth. Checking their identity cards and passports shows that they were all born on the 11th of the month of their birth year. However, it is confirmed that the Prophet – peace be upon him – died on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal in the 11th year of the Hijra.

Green decorations and lights have spread throughout the areas controlled by the Houthis, with the installation of hundreds of billboards bearing the group’s sectarian slogans and excerpts from their leader’s speeches or quotes from its founder, Hussein al-Houthi, in conjunction with the Mawlid celebration.

The group has imposed on owners of large buildings and prominent shops in cities and rural areas to use green decorations and lights, and to paint doors and windows green.

They have also mandated that schools and public institutions prepare for the celebration of the “Mawlid” with decorations and lights, allocating part of their revenues for this purpose.

Educational sources have revealed that Houthi leaders in the education sector instructed public and private school principals, via social media messaging apps, to submit reports on their preparations for the celebrations, including details of the equipment and materials used, with threats to those who fail to keep up with the celebrations and their preparations.
