Turkish prosecutors demand 22-year jail for Gülen nephew

Turkish prosecutors have demanded a 22-year and 6-month jail sentence for the cleric’s nephew Fethullah Gülen for his alleged participation in the coup.

The Turkish secret service has kidnapped Gülen, the nephew of Fethullah Gülen, from Kenya, despite a court decision preventing his extradition, which has led to human rights criticism.

On Friday, Turkish opposition newspaper ”Eni Jagh” said that the public prosecution in the capital Ankara prepared an indictment against Salah El-din and sent it to the 27 district of the Supreme Criminal Court.

According to the same source, the Turkish Public Prosecution demanded the imprisonment of Salah El-din Gülen for 22 years and 6 months.

Kamel Gülen, the accused’s older brother, issued a statement on the latest developments in his brother’s case, saying that he was “forced to sign some statements under torture and ill-treatment, and when he went to court they did not accept taking any of the lawyers we provided to defend him.”

Ankara accuses Fethullah Gülen, a Pennsylvania-based Turkish preacher, of masterminding the alleged 2016 coup, a charge the latter strongly denies.

The Turkish opposition is responding by emphasizing that the events of the night of 15 July were a “staged coup” to liquidate opposition soldiers and members of civil society organizations.

Turkish authorities have regularly carried out thousands of arrests since the coup attempt on charges of having contact with the Gülen group, as well as many of their jobs in the army, universities, and other government jobs, under presidential decrees.
