Syria reopens its embassy in Morocco and supports its autonomy plan for the Sahara

Syria reopened its embassy in Morocco on Thursday, expressing its support for Rabat’s autonomy plan for the Sahara.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani oversaw the reopening of his country’s embassy in Rabat by raising the Syrian flag at the diplomatic mission’s premises.

An official ceremony was held on this occasion in the presence of Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, according to the Moroccan News Agency.

Al-Shibani emphasized the strong symbolic significance of reopening the embassy in Rabat, stating that it reflects Syria’s new determination to open a promising chapter in its relations with the Kingdom of Morocco and to strengthen bilateral cooperation based on trust, solidarity, and mutual respect.

He also expressed his country’s ambition to strengthen ties with Morocco in various fields, within a partnership based on dialogue, coordination, and development for the benefit of both peoples.

For his part, Bourita expressed satisfaction over the reopening of the Syrian embassy in Rabat, describing the initiative as a highly significant step in the process of relaunching bilateral relations between the two countries.

He recalled Morocco’s reopening of its embassy in Damascus in June 2025, affirming that this event reflects the shared will of both countries to consolidate strong and lasting relations rooted in historical fraternal ties.

He also expressed Morocco’s readiness to accompany Syria during this delicate transitional phase, through support based on solidarity, dialogue, and cooperation, contributing to the aspirations of the Syrian people for security, stability, and development.

On another note, Syria reaffirmed its full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco and its sovereignty over its territory.

This position was included in the joint statement issued on the occasion of Al-Shibani’s visit to Rabat.

Al-Shibani also stated that Syria “welcomes and supports UN Security Council Resolution 2797, considering it a turning point in the search for a lasting political solution to this regional dispute.”

The United Nations Security Council voted on the resolution last October, which supports Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Moroccan Sahara.

This visit marks Al-Shibani’s first trip to Morocco as Syrian Foreign Minister.
